Moray MP Douglas Ross is reminding job seekers in Moray to seek advice at their local job centres about schemes and assistance that may be available to make it easier for them to find work.
Douglas recently highlighted a new job seeker’s website which can be used to look for local job opportunities and he has also sought to promote a discounted travel card which offers reduced costs for people to get to job interviews, but is not widely used in Moray, with just nine people taking it up across the region.
Commenting Douglas said: “I have been in touch with the Job Centre Plus in Moray to ask them how they promote the travel scheme, and I understand this is being done where it is relevant. I understand there are lots of ways that job centres across Moray are helping people, from travel, to help with buying suitable clothing, and other forms of assistance.”
He added: “The discounted travel scheme is also being promoted through a partnership with Network Rail and it’s great to see this joint working which will help to give jobseekers a helping hand.”
“The cost of travel can sometimes be a barrier to getting to interviews and training and it is initiatives like these that are making the difference for getting people into work but much more needs to be done to raise awareness of this scheme and I have received reassurance from local job centres that they will help raise awareness of this travel pass.
“If just one person that wouldn’t otherwise have gone to an interview gets a job due to having discounted travel this is a worthwhile exercise. It is important that job seekers have every assistance in finding work.”
